Gideon E. Rothwell, formerly of near Smyrna, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. James W. Shaver, at Mount Union, Pa., Friday last, after a lingering illness. The deceased was the son of the late William Rothwell of Levels, and was born August 1, 1817.
Mr. Rothwell was at one time a large land owner in New Castle county and had always been the friend of the poor and it is said he never denied a friend a favor. Owing to his generosity he paid thousands of dollars to assist men who were in distress and trouble. In politics Mr. Rothwell was a staunch Democrat, but he never sought an office. He formerly owned the "Rothwell Farm," near Smyrna, now owned by E. G. Walls, and lived there 40 years.
At one time he also owned several acres of Cedar Swamp, where he cut large quantities of lumber. That spot is now covered with water. When a famer, Mr. Rothwell was an authority upon that subject and was noted for the fine peaches and other fruit he grew. Mr. Rothwell lost his wife a year ago. He connected himself with the Presbyterian Church of Mt. Union three years ago, and interment was made in that town Sunday afternoon. The deceased leaves seven children, George C. Rothwell of Blackbird hundred, Mrs. George C. Borst, Newville, Pa. Miss Annie E. Rothwell, Mrs. John A. Gayton, Lewistown, Pa.; Mrs. James W. Shaver; William Rothwell, New York; B. F. C. Rothwell, West Point, Va.
