John A. Gayton, former resident of Mount Union, died suddenly at his home in Lewistown Sunday morning early, from an attack of neuralgia of the heart. Mr. Gayton had been on duty Saturday as postal clerk on the Lewistown and Sunbury Division and had returned apparently in good health. He awoke, however, shortly after midnight with severe pains about the heart. Medical aid was summoned, and everything done to relieve his suffering, but of no avail. Mr. Gayton was born at Rohrerstown, Lancaster county, Pa. The greater portion of his early life was spent in Newton Hamilton, and later in Mount Union. He moved from Mt. Union to Lewistown about 17 years ago. He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Mary A. Shaver of Mount Union. Two children survived this union, D. C. Gayton, assistant city engineer of Denver, Colorado, and Miss Alda Gayton. His second wife was Miss Mary Rothwell of Smyrna, Delaware. She with one son, Fred Gayton of Philadelphia, survives.
Mr. Gayton was in the employ of the government as a postal clerk 30 years. He was a member of the Presbyterian church of Lewistown.
Short funeral services were conducted by Rev. William Mudge at the residence at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, after which the funeral party came on the 1:31 train to Mt. Union, where funeral services were also held at the Presbyterian church. Interment in Odd Fellows cemetery here, in the family plot.
