Son of Gen Vallejo. For a time lived in Benicia with sister Fanny and her husband John Frisbie. Started studying at San Francisco College & decided to study medicine. Entered College of Physicians and Surgeons department of Columbia University and worked in the New York Hospital. Earned MD in 1864. Became member of NY Corps of Surgeons in Union Army in Washington, DC during Civil War. Dr Vallejo returned home as assistant surgeon to Navy and was ship's surgeon for Pacific Mail Steamship Co. He married wife Lily Wiley who came to San Francisco to visit her sister. They married in 1867. Resigned from Steamship Co. and opened practice in Vallejo. They had 4 daughters. Lily died 1885. California licensed physicians in 1876, & Dr.Vallejo became a licensed physician a year later. Well respected member of community, and California's first California-born physician. Buried next to wife Lily.
