Civil War veteran - Enlisted as a Private in Company K, 151st Regiment, Indiana Infantry on February 17, 1865. Mustered out May 23, 1865.

Birth date calculated from age at death. Married Betsy Ann Winegar on January 14, 1845 in Union County, Ohio. They farmed in Union County (1850 and 1860 censuses) and in Starke County, Indiana (1870 and 1880 censuses). In 1900 Joseph, who had separated from or divorced Betsy, lived in Ulysses, Nebr. with his widowed daughter Alice Baker and her three children. The census (taken a few weeks before his death) lists his occupation as merchant.

William Wynegar (Find A Grave # 152437851) of San Pierre, Indiana and John Wynegar (# 99954127) of Ohio and Ulysses, Nebraska were Joseph's brothers-in-law.

The Rev. Jos. Mulvain, father of Mrs. Baker, who had been ill for a long time at the home of his daughter in Ulysses, died July 5, 1900, aged 76 yrs., 2 mos. and 5 days. He was an old soldier, a good citizen and a Godly man. Funeral services were held in the M. E. church July 6, Rev. Dr. Martin officiating, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Ulysses cemetery.

Mrs. Alice Baker and family desire to express their sincere thanks in this paper to the kind friends who assisted them during the illness and funeral of their father.
