Katherine was born in Alford, Lincolnshire, England to William Hutchinson and Anne Marbury. She immigrated to America with her parents, her grandmother, Susanna Hutchinson and her siblings in 1634.

In the early morning hours of August 20, 1643 a group of marauding Mohegan Indians raided the Hutchinson home and slaughtered the family and burned their home to the ground. The Indians mistook the Hutchinson's for Dutch settlers, the intended target. Katherine's sister, Susanna Hutchinson was the only survivor. She was held as a captive for several years, until her older brother Edward paid a ransom for her release.

The Hutchinson cabin was located in Pelham Bay Settlement, Long Island, which today is called the Bronx, New York.
