Granddad did not know his parents. His mother is said to have died when he was young. His father is said to have left him in a boarding house one morning, never to return. He was raised by a woman named "Brothers". He never knew his real name, nor his actual birthday. He joined the Navy and gave them the Aug 31 1898 birthday, in 1983, he told me he could have been younger but just was not sure.
