Helen Farley, nee Bakke or Sanderson, was born in Tin Prestegaard, Telemarken, Norway, on May 22, 1839. She was the youngest of six children. She came to this country in 1843, together with her parents and brothers and sisters. Helen Bakke was married in April 1860 to Christopher Farley, who died August 11, 1895. This union was blessed with eight children, as follows: Esther J, who died in 1887, aged 26 years; Henry Martin, who died in infancy; Matilda A, who was married to John Johnson and died in 1889, aged 26 years, leaving two children; Leonard, who lives with his father in Iowa, and Esther, who lived with her grandmother and cared for her during her last illness; Hannah L, who married B. D. Anderson, and resides near the old homestead; William C. and Eddy H., both of whom reside in Leland; Franklin H. on the old homestead, and Alfred A., in Earlville township. Mrs. Farley lately has had her home with her son Alfred, where she died peacefully on January 8, 1908, aged 68 years, 7 months and 16 days. Mrs. Farley became a member of the Lutheran church in her childhood, together with her parents at whose home the old Leland Congregation was organized, now more than 60 years ago. In due time she was instructed in the principles of the Christian religion and confirmed in the faith of her baptism. She has remained a member of the church continually, and let us hope that her name was also inscribed in the book of Life and that she has now entered into that rest which remaineth for the people of God. One brother, five children and eight grandchildren, together with a large number of nephews and nieces and more distant relatives mourn their loss and her departure. The funeral took place from the Lutheran church Sunday afternoon, Rev Eitrem, of Lee, officiating. Interment in the Baker Cemetery.
