Permelia, or Permealy as is on her headstone, was the daughter of George Willis and Mary Winnie Martin Layfield. She was born in Georgia as was all her family except her mother who came from South Carolina.

She can be found in the 1850 census of Marion County, as being aged twelve and living with her parents and siblings, Georgia 16, Floyd 10, Drury 8, Thomas 6 and John who was seven months old. Her father was farming at the time.

At around 1960 and somewhere in her teens, Permelia married a local gentleman, Mr. Henry James Averett, son of George and Mary Layfield and the family started a family of their own, setting up housekeeping in Taylor County, Georgia. First came a daughters, Penny in 1861 and Drew I. in 1863, followed by George W. in 1865, Frances Melvina in 1868 and Winnie E. 1870. More would be coming later.

In the 1870 census, they could be found living in the Davidson District, in northeast Taylor County. Now her husband Henry is working in the grits mill.

Other children coming along about this time were: Nancy Denise in 1873, Henry M. "Hal" in 1876 and Sally Lou was born about 1880. At this time the family was pretty much in tact, except that Penny, their oldest, was not with them, so it is assumed she had moved away. They were then living closer in to the town of Howard in Taylor County and Henry was in charge of his own grist or flour mill.

Two short years later on January 18, 1882, Permelia's husband Henry passed away, leaving her with a number of children to raise. She can next be found in the 1900 census at the age of sixty-four. Her son Hal was then acting as head of house and there were only those two and her daughter Sally living together at the time. The census notes that seven of her eight children were still living at the time.

She passed away in May of 1905 and is laid to rest next to her husband Henry. Others of her family are also buried close by.
