Howard Man Dies While Carrying Flowers to Place on Wife’s Grave.
While carrying flowers to the cemetery to place on the grave of his devoted companion, whose death occurred about one year ago, being his daily custom since her death, Mr. George W. Averett, of Howard, dropped dead about 5 o’clock Thursday afternoon last week near the residence of Mr. J. E. Brown in Howard.
Mr. Averett was about 66 years of age, a native of Taylor county, and one of the county’s very best citizens. He had been in declining health for several months, tho his condition was not regarded as serious. The news of his unexpected passing came as a great shock to his loved ones and many friends.
Although not a member of any church he was inclined to Primitive Baptist faith, a regular church attendant and regarded by all as a Christian gentleman.
Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at the Howard Methodist church, Revs. E. H. Dunn and J. A. Cook, of Butler officiating.
Mr. Averett is survived by two children, Mrs. Ouida Cannon of Macon and Miss Mary Lou Averett of Howard. Other surviving relatives are: H. M. Averett of Columbus, a brother; Mrs. W. M. Brown, Mrs. J. R. Montgomery, Mrs. W. H. Martin and Miss Sallie Averett, sisters.
