ELIZA L. WHITE
Eliza Louise Smith, daughter of J.R. and Eliza Graham Smith, was born on a farm three miles southeast of Lamoni, March 14, 1878, and died in the hospital at Tahlequah, Okla. September 30, 1971 at the age of 93 years, 6 months and 16 days. She was next to the youngest of ten children, all of whom had preceded her in death and she spent her lifetime in and near Lamoni, except for the past two years when she made her home with a son, Max, and family at Tahlequah.

Her parents came to this area in a covered wagon and lived in a log cabin in the fall of 1866 when the present town of Lamoni was open prairie, the town being established as a cluster of buildings in a corn field about the time she was born. She attended Togo country school, where she later taught after graduating from Lamoni High School and was a member of the first class attending Graceland College. She was secretary to D.F. Nicholson during the early development of Lamoni and for a time worked as a secretary in Omaha.

September 24, 1902, she married A. Otis White. They had four children. Mr. White died in 1930.

She grew up as a Methodist and later joined the RLDS Church in 1911. Lou was a charter member and officer of the Lamoni Booster Club, active in the Patroness Society and the Lamoni Public Library. She was a member of the Tuesday Club and other local organizations.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughters, Gertrude (Mrs. Evan) Walden and Marjorie Delphine.

She is survived by two sons, Rollin and wife of Lamoni and Maxwell and wife of Tahlequah; son-in law, Evan Walden; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
