Arthur Hastings Smith was born Dec. 6, 1880, on a farm near Lamoni. He was one of 11 children born to James R. and Eliza Graham Smith. He was the youngest of the eight children who grew to maturity. He passed away at his home in Lamoni, on Sept. 19, 1959, following a long illness.

He is survived by his wife, two sisters, Mrs. Minnie B. Keller of Yorkville, Ill., Mrs. Louise White of Lamoni; and this two children, Raymond H. of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Gracia, Mrs. Lawrence A. Herbert of Tampa, Fla. There are three Smith grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Also surviving are two stepsons, Robert H. and Ray L. Puckett of Houston, Texas, and three step-grandchildren who respected him as a father and grandfather.

His early education was in the rural school near his childhood home and he was graduated from Lamoni high school in 1897. He later attended Graceland college.

On Jan. 11, 1905, he married Georgia Horner, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James B. Horner of Lamoni. She passed away May 23, 1934.

From 1905 until 1907 they lived in Kellerton, where he was in a general mercantile business with Walt Frisby.

In 1908, they came back to Lamoni where he was engaged In farming and the livestock business until 1933. Early in these years, between 1910 and 1913 he also operated a meat market In Lamoni.

He served the town of Lamoni as a councilman from 1918 until 1930, and was a member of the school board here from 1930 until 1932, when he resigned to move to a farm near Waterloo, Iowa.

Following a severe break in his health in 1936, he came back to Lamoni in the fall of 1937, and began a comeback to health and economic independence.

In 1942 the moved to Mapleton, Iowa, where he managed a number of farms for the late W.H. Chrisman.

In 1946 he married Maude Fern Puckett and they continued to live in Mapleton until 1948 when they returned to Lamoni where they purchased a home and farm and he continued as a farmer and stockman.

Few men follow a vocation with more devotion than he gave to farming and livestock. Of him it may truly be said, "The eye of the master fattens his cattle."

He had the distinction of being a member of the Masonic order—Fayette Lodge No. 571 for almost 57 years and their principles were his code of ethics.

Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery, Lamoni, Monday.
