1. Mrs. Evan Walden Succumbs Sunday, Rites at Lamoni
Mrs. Gertrude L. Walden, 59, wife of Evan H. Walden of 1133 Main Street, died Sunday evening at a Grinnell hospital after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Reorganized Latter Day Saints church in Lamoni with burial at Rose Hill cemetery.

The daughter of Otis and Louise Smith White, she was born on Sept. 7th, 1906, at Lamoni. She attended the schools of Lamoni and graduated from Graceland College in 1927.

On June 26th, 1928, she was united in marriage with Evan H. Walden at Lamoni and to this union four children were born: Mrs. Alvin (Carolyn) Berry of Stamford, Conn.; Kenneth of Surry, Maine; William of Portland, Ore.; and John of Riverside, Calif.

Mrs. Walden taught piano and voice throughout her life and when possible continued her music education at several colleges.

Mr. and Mrs. Walden made their home at Lamoni until 1951 when they moved to Des Moines where he was affiliated with Drake University. In 1955 they moved to Oberlin, Ohio, where he held a position with Oberlin College. They came to Grinnell and Grinnell College in 1958.

She is survived by her husband, Evan, her mother, Mrs. Otis White of Lamoni; and two brothers, Rollin White of Lamoni and Maxwell of Tahlequah, Okla. Also surviving are her four children and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and an infant sister.

2. Evan Walden and Gertrude White Marriage
"The marriage of Gertrude L. White, only daughter of Brother and Sister A. Otis White, of Lamoni, and Evan H. Walden, of Independence, was solemnized at the Brick Church, Tuesday evening, June 26, at eight o'clock, Elder W. E. Prall officiating.

"Preceding the ceremony, Sister C. E. Norris, of Letts, Iowa, aunt of the bride, sang "Beloved, It Is Morning," by Ayward, and "At Dawning," by Cadman, accompanied at the piano by Jaunita Nixon, who also played "The Wedding March" from Lohengrin and "The Recessional" by Mendelssohn, as the wedding party entered and retired. During the ceremony she played "To a Wild Rose."

"The bride was accompanied by Sister A.R. Gilbert, matron of honor; Nelle Walden, of Flint, Michigan, and Margaret McPherson, of Independence, were bridesmaids. Wayne Bootman was best man; other attendants were Max White and George Gates. Rollin White and Burton Hynden were ushers. Jimmie Butler Smith carried the ring in a lily; Wanda Lee France and Celesta Nixon were flower girls.

"Immediately following the ceremony, a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents for about one hundred and thirty guests. Brother and Sister Walden left at once for a wedding trip in the Ozarks. Upon their return they will establish a home in Independence, Missouri."

3. On June 26, 1928, Gertrude married Evan Henry Walden in the Lamoni brick church. Wilbur Prall, Evan's brother Jim's father-in-law, presided. Wayne Bootman and Mrs. A.R. Gilbert were witnesses.
Gertrude was a gifted musician of piano and voice. Over the years, she taught music to help provide for the family.
She was a woman familiar with suffering. For twenty-five years, she argued with cancer. The fruit of her pain was her deepened value and love of life and family.
