Reuben Marvin (Jack) Bryan, 94, longtime Cimarron and Texas County educator, died Monday, April 17, 2000 at Memorial Hospital of Texas County in Guymon.


Born Nov.7, 1905 near Leedy in Oklahoma Territory to Eula K. (Watson) and Edgar Marvin Bryan, he moved with the family in 1908 in a covered wagon to the Oklahoma Panhandle where they homesteaded near Bryan's Corner.

He attended country schools before finishing high school in Goodwell and graduating from Panhandle A&M College in 1930.

He married Ruth Agnes McBryde, Aug. 12, 1930 in Liberal, Kansas and he began his career in coaching and education at Felt, where he also served as superintendent.

He was later superintendent in Keyes and Yarbrough, elementary school principal at Hooker and county superintendent of Cimarron and Texas Counties.

After teaching 40 years, he and his wife, a teacher for 30 years, retired in 1972 and made their home in Guymon where they organized the Retired Teacher's Organization for Texas and Cimarron Counties.

The Bryans were recognized as "Special Teachers of Oklahoma" and he was honored as 1994 Pioneer Day Parade Marshall.
He was an active member of the Guymon First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and a Bible class. He was also a member of the Guymon Lions Club.

Preceding him in death are his wife, Ruth, Nov. 18, 1998; five sisters; two brothers; and an infant son, Donald Charles Bryan.

Survivors include three sons, Jack Boyd Bryan and his wife, Sharon of Duncanville, TX, David Robert (Bob) Bryan and his wife, Mary Lou of Ponca City and Pat Marvin Bryan of Balko; sister, Della Bryan of Amarillo, TX, five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held April 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the Guymon First Baptist Church with Rev. John Goss of Adams officiating."
