Elmer was the son of Benjamin Franklin Vail and Savannah Cordelia Gainey Wilson Vail Alexander. He married Ruth Edgeworth Horton, daughter of Benjamin Lucas Horton and Nannie Queen Knight. Their children: Herbert Wayne Vail b. & d. Bessemer, Alabama, and Lambert Egan Vail, of Birmingham, Alabama. He had the most beautiful penmanship! Cause of death: automobile accident
