Hervey was named for James Hervey A.M. who wrote "Meditations", and who was the rector of Weston Farell, North Hamptonshire, England. Isaac was for his grandfather Baldwin.

Until he was twenty he received only six weeks' schooling in a year, doing farm work the rest of the time. But in 1832-3, he spent six months at Norwich Academy and there developed a thirst for knowledge which led him to take a college course.

He entered Dartmouth in 1835 and at the end of his Sophomore year was appointed principal of the Latin Grammar School at Cambridge. He taught there two years meanwhile completing his Junior year's work.

In 1839 he entered the Senior class at Harvard, graduating with honors in 1840. He went on to attend Newton Theological Institute, but was pressed to take charge of Needham and Dover Baptist church, and began preaching in 1840.

He was ordained in 1842, and soon married Silvia A. Ammidon. Three years after, he accepted a call from the church at Burlington, Vermont, remaining there ten years. In 1854 he went to Wisconsin, to aid in establishing the Beaver Dam and Fox Lake schools. Two years later he went to Austin and took charge of the Baptist church. The church grew rapidly and the present building was erected in 1862.

Sylvia died in 1850 of tuberculosis. She anticipated her death as she picked out a friend of hers as her successor. He married this woman two years later -- her name was Rosanna Cobine and she was a Mt. Holyoke graduate. Anna remembered her own mother as a beautiful, gentle and loveable woman. Her father seemed to her a wise and loving and companionable man who took her with him on many of his calls and thus gave her some of the most cherished memories of her childhood.

Hervey took his family west to Beaver Dam, WI in 1856 to do educational work for the church. He enjoyed a great revival in his church at Beaver Dam during his time in ministry.

In 1861 they moved to Austin, MN. He became Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Austin, a position he held for 11 years. His second wife died in 1862 and four years later he married for a third time to Diantha Maria Sabin. She was considered by everyone to be a fine woman and a great help to her husband in his work. Anna was married about the same time.

In 1872 the family relocated to Southern California. He had churches at Visalia, Santa Barbara, Santa Ana, and San Bernadino. His work was successful and he and his third wife were highly thought of. They helped Anna in her marriage troubles and aided in rearing Edwin's son Henry. His sister Emma was also given a home by them.

In 1881 Hervey earned his Doctorate of Divinity from California College and in 1883 he was elected President of the California Baptist State Convention.

Hervey died of typhoid fever at Riverside, CA at the age of 72.

Hervey was described as "tall, slight, hair inclined to be a little curly - it kept its natural brown to an advanced age; eyes gray."

His dying message was: "Tell my friends that Christ is mine and that I am going home to be present with Him."
