In 1842 Hervey & Sylvia moved to Manchester, VT, where Hervey was ordained a Baptist Minister. They also lived in Burlington and Fairfax, VT before moving to Wisconsin, to aid in establishing the Beaver Dam and Fox Lake schools in 1854. Two years later they went to Austin, MN where Hervey took charge of the Baptist church. The church grew rapidly and the present building was erected in 1862.
Sylvia died tragically in 1850 of tuberculosis, just 36 years old. Her two living children were only 6 & 8 years old. She anticipated her death as she picked out a friend of hers as her successor.
Sylvia's daughter Anna remembered her own mother as a beautiful, gentle and loveable woman.
Sylvia organized and was elected President of the "Femail Society of Industry", and organization that held meetings at their home. The group consisted of female members from their church. The minutes of the March 1851 record the following: "Five long months have passed since we have met as a Society. During this time death has entered our ranks and... by a dark and mysterious Providence we have been called to mourn the loss of our beloved President, who was suddenly called from the society of loved ones on earth, to join as we trust, the Society of the redeemed in Heaven. May her virtues long be remembered by us and we be stimulated to 'be not weary in well-doing' that in due time we too may receive the welcome plaudit 'well done thou good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.' "

Family records indicate that there were large portraits of Hervey & Sylvia painted shortly before Sylvia's death. Should any visitor have access to a photograph of the painting, our family would be most grateful to have it posted on this memorial page.
