Russell Melvin 'Butts' Backstrom, 82, of Collinsburg, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, in Excela Health Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. Born Aug. 24, 1923, in Collinsburg, he was a son of the late William and Betty (Bryner) Backstrom. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a burner by Fort Pitt Foundry in McKeesport. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in West Newton and a member of the Collinsburg Volunteer Fire Company. A World War II veteran, he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Daryle (Yex) Backstrom; a brother, William Backstrom and his wife, Ruth, and a sister, J. Pearce, all of Collinsburg; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Alvira Backstrom, of Ohio, and Marie and Emil Babines, of Donora; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Backstrom; and two sisters, Olga Dennick and Viola Dubinshak. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, at Christ Lutheran Church, West Newton, with the Rev. Allen R. Riethmiller officiating.
