Clara Bird was the daughter of Greenup Bird, who was the Cashier at the Liberty, Missouri bank in 1866, when the James Gang robbed it. Clara married Witten McDonald 7 October 1868 in Chillicothe, Livingston County, Missouri. Clara had seven children: Frank, William, Clara, Martha, Donald, Bessie, and Helen McDonald.
Clara had a sister, Mary Elizabeth Bird, who was the wife of Dr. Alexander Dockery, Governor of Missouri. Mary Bird Dockery died in the Governor's mansion in Jefferson City in 1903.
