Herbert J. Simmons, 88, of Davis passed away April 18 at his residence.

He was born August 25, 1919 at Jenningston, a son of the late Edward and Chloe Bodkin Simmons.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gaynal Bonner Simmons in 1992.

He is survived by four sons Frank of Davis, George of Philippi, Herbert Fay (and Sharon) and Olin Fred (and Loretta) of Alexandria, Va.; nine daughters Virginia Flynn of Davis, Mildred (and Kenneth) Martin of Davis, Ruby (and Charles) Batman of Deep Creek, Md., Erma (Don) Dewitt of Deep Creek, Md., Jean (Fred) Loughry of St. George, Patsy Bonner of Hendricks, Mary Mouck of Hillboro, Ohio, Shirley (and Joe) Sutton of New Jersey, Thelma Eye of Annapolis, Md.; two brothers Hoye (Pete) Simmons of Harman and Richard Simmons of Baltimore, Md; two sisters Twilia Wolford of Dry Fork and Argele Shank of Harrisonburg, Va.; 30 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter Carol; two brothers and one sister.

He was a retired state road employee.

Friends were received at the Hinkle Funeral Home on Sunday, April 20 from 4 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services were held at the Davis United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 21.

Interment followed at the Flanagan Hill Cemetery at Red Creek.

Hinkle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
