In November 1930, at the age of seven, she moved with her family from Glenfield to a farm on outer Stowe Street in Lowville. Doris graduated from Lowville Academy in 1941. She worked at Graham's Store in Lowville before working as head bookkeeper at Lowville Producer's Dairy Co-Op, Inc. from 1943 to 1946. On April 25, 1945, she married Arthur Earl Stanton. Mr. Stanton died January 12, 1997. Together, the couple purchased the former Clara Stoddard farm on the West Martinsburg Road, outer Stowe Street, and owned and operated the dairy farm until June 1987, retiring from farming after 42 years. After retirement, they designed and had their home built on Summit Avenue, where they lived and enjoyed having family and friends visit. In 2007, Doris sold her home, and moved to Brookside Senior Living Community, where she enjoyed the Brookside family. Mrs. Stanton worked as bookkeeper in the office of the couple's Stanton Insurance business from 1951 until 1985. The business was sold to their nephew, the late Thomas McCue, and became the Stanton-McCue Agency, which is now Foy Agency.

Mrs. Stanton was a member of Lowville United Methodist Church, where she was active with the United Methodist Women, Boosters of the Church, and was chairperson of the Communion Committee for many years. Doris enjoyed photography, and loved to host gatherings of family and friends at her home and at the family camp at Brantingham Lake, most of all, she loved her family.
