Artie Gladys Holbert, 99, of Fairmont, passed from this life Thursday, (Feb. 26, 2009) at the Pierpont Center at Fairmont Campus (Wishing Well Manor) after a brief illness.
She was born in Mannington on July 7, 1909 a daughter of the late Claude O. and Pearl Parrish Moore.
Gladys was an active member of the Faith United Methodist Church (1st. United Methodist) where she was a member of the Kezia Circle, the Methodist Women's Society and the XYZ Club.
She also served as a volunteer at Fairmont General Hospital, was a member of the Fairmont Women's Club and the Business and Professional Women. She was an associate member of the FOP Lodge No. 69. She enjoyed helping others and doing yard work.
During WW II she worked at the Jewel Tea Co. in Chicago, and she retired as a payroll clerk at Westinghouse Corp. after 25 years of service.
Mrs. Holbert is survived by one brother, George Moore of Fairview; one sister, Goldie Fluharty of Mannington; several nieces and nephews and great- and great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Addis Ray Holbert on March 17, 1994; her son, Albert R. Holbert; her daughter, Sarah I. Holbert; two brothers John D. Moore and Billy Moore; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Audrey and Walter Glover, Nell and Maynard Tennent, and Leota Glover; also her sister-in-law, Jane Moore.
Gladys has requested that memorial contributions in her name be made to the Faith United Methodist Church, 322 Fairmont Ave., Fairmont, WV 26554
Friends may call at the Frey Home For Funerals (Historic Chapel), 320 Madison St., Fairmont, Sunday from noon-5 p.m. and Monday from 9:30-11 a.m. Services will be held in the funeral home Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Clyde Beard officiating. Interment will follow at the Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
