Hays, Larry, age 86, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, died on Thursday, June 11, 2003, at his home, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer for the last five years. He was born on October 1, 1916, at Pine Top, Ky., a son of the late Nelson and Lucinda Smith. Larry was a combat veteran of WWII. He served in the European Theatre in General George Patton's' Third Army and was awarded the sharpshooters medal. He worked for the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Battle Creek, Mich. for thirty Seven years, receiving several outstanding service awards, and retiring in 1988. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Ruby Garrett Hayes (married in 1953, died in 1996). He is survived by three stepchildren, Jackie Copeland of Mendon Mich., Priscilla Buckhols of Climax, Mich., and Trish Kilburn of Cleburne, Texas; his loving companion, Margaret Wilson of Kalamazoo, Mich..; Margaret's children, Margaret Bert of Chicago, Illinois, Marsha Baliff of Galesburg, Mich., and Billy Wilson, Jr. of Climax, Mich; his sister, Alma Banks of Kentucky; niece Edna Collins of Kentucky; thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, June 14, at 3:00 p.m. at Farley-Estes and Dowdle Augusta Chapel, with Pastor Don Ibbotson officiating.
