In May 1951, he married Ruth Anna McCreary, and she died in 1978. In March 1993, he married JoAnn Orr, and she survives.
Mr. Alkire was a member of Dayton Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon and elder, and Dayton Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed boating, fishing, gardening, carpentry and playing cards.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Jerry W. Alkire of Fort Wayne; three daughters, JoAnn Abbott, Cheryl Alspaugh, and Lisa Alkire, all of Lafayette; a brother, Norman Alkire of Lafayette seven grandchildren, Emily and Molly Abbott, Erin and Ellen Alkire, Adam, Ryan and Anna Alspaugh; five step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by a brother, Truman Alkire. Service Aug. 15, Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, the Rev. Stanley Bomgarden officiating; burial at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.
