Phyllis JoAnn "Vanderkolk" Orr Alkire, 74, died at 1:31 AM Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center. The daughter of the late Joseph R. and Hattie Chamberlain Vanderkolk, she was born Jan. 27, 1930, at Gosport, IN, and spent most of her life in Lafayette. She was married to James V. Orr on June 12, 1940; he died in 1989. She then married Charles Wesley Alkire on March 20, 1993, and he died I 2001.

Mrs. Alkire was a nurses' aide at St. Elizabeth Hospital and was a Q.N.A. at the Pythian Home. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, and enjoyed shopping and garage sales.

Surviving are two daughters, Sherry (Mrs. Joe) Mikesell of Lafayette and Jackie A. (Mrs. Tom) Ketterer; three stepdaughters, Joann (Mrs. Denny) Abbott, Cheryl (Mrs. Michael) Alspaugh, and Lisa Alkire; two sisters, Margaret McDowell of Lafayette and Alice Lindner of Brookston; a brother, Tom (wife Louise) Vanderkolk of Lafayette; five grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Vanderkolk; and a stepson, Jerry W. Alkire.
