Obituary of Samuel York 10 Jan 1873,

Died, on yesterday morning at 3 o'clock at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. W.C. Chumlea, Mr. Samuel York, in the seventy-fourth year of his age.

Funeral services will be held at the 2d Presbyterian Church this morning at half past 9 o'clock, after which the remains will be taken to Lone's burying grounds [now Callahan Cemetery], six miles North of this city for interment.

Mr. York was born in Randolph county, North Carolina, in October, 1799, and was married to Miss Mary Cox, in 1821. He removed to this State in 1824 and shortly afterwards went to Middle Tennessee, where he resided about two years. He then returned to this county and settled in Hind's valley, about six and a-half miles from Knoxville, near the Knoxville and Ohio Railroad, where he engaged in farming, which he followed until a short time before his death, when came to this city and resided with his daughter, Mrs. Chumlea.
