LaFAYETTE Mrs. Stella Abernathy Pierce, 84, of LaFayette died Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at her residence.
Funeral services are scheduled Thursday, April 20 at 11 a.m. at LaFayette First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Hand officiating. Burial will follow at LaFayette City Cemetery.
Mrs. Pierce is survived by three children, Carol (Jimmy) Plott of Birmingham, Ala., Jane (Dean) Meadows of Albany, Ga., and Butch (Beth) Pierce of Dadeville; three sisters, Sara Yancey and Juanita Allen, both of LaFayette, and Diann (Buddy) Nix of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one brother, David (Mickie) Abernathy of Newnan, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Christie Rierson, Brian Plott, Lynn McFall, Randell Meadows, Stella Pierce, Valerie Pierce and Marty Pierce; and two great-grandchildren, Cole and Brooke Rierson.
Born Dec. 7, 1921 in Chambers County, Mrs. Pierce was the daughter of the late Henry Stewart (Lube) and Docia Abernathy. She was a member of Pilot International and was a member of organizations relating to her position as circuit clerk. Mrs. Pierce worked as deputy clerk of the circuit court for John A. Williams from 1953 until his death in 1964. At that time, she was appointed to fill his position. She was later elected clerk, becoming the first woman ever to be elected to public office in Chambers County. She remained clerk until her retirement in 1991.
Mrs. Pierce was a member of LaFayette First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Luther Pierce Jr., her brother, Vincent Abernathy, and her sister, Nellie Ruth Allen.
“She served tirelessly and selflessly until she retired from that office in 1991, 28 years as circuit clerk,” said Chambers County Circuit Clerk Charles Story. “Mrs. Stella was not only loved and respected by the citizens of Chambers County for the job that she did, but was also well thought of and respected throughout the court system in the state of Alabama. I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Stella Pierce.”
Story recalled his first time meeting Pierce on a professional basis in 1978.
“I was a young police officer who was absolutely lost in the court system. Mrs. Stella had a gift for helping people and I was no exception. She helped to teach me about the circuit court and court procedures,” said Story. “Through the years I observed Mrs. Stella at work and in the community. She never ceased to amaze me as to how she cared for and loved others. She had a presence about her that would absolutely light up a room. You knew when Mrs. Stella was there and she always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she came in contact with.
“In 1994, when I decided to run for the office of circuit clerk, I told Mrs. Stella that it was my desire that if I were to be elected, I would do half as good of a job as she had and would be as well thought of as she was. She just smiled at me and said I know you can Charles. I meant that and am still striving to reach that goal.”
He said that there is absolutely no way to ever know how many people Pierce has touched and helped along their way.
“I am honored to be one of those people. Mrs. Stella was a kind, compassionate and loving person,” said Story. “Stella A. Pierce, a classy lady in all aspects of the word. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.”
The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 19 from 5 until 8 p.m. at Jeff Jones Funeral Home in LaFayette.
Jeff Jones Funeral Home of LaFayette is handling arrangements.
