A well known leader, Rev. James I. Shockley, 83, Danville, died Monday evening, July 16 (1979), in the Hendricks County Hospital after suffering a heart attack in his home earlier in the day.

He was born to Charles and Nevada (Drake) Shockley on Feb. 21, 1896, in Jamestown. A 1915 graduate of Lizton High School, he received degrees from Johnston Bible College, Butler University and Indiana University. For 54 years, he was a minister for the Christian Church - Disciples of Christ Brotherhood. He had served churches in the area at Pittsboro, Lizton, Danville and Fillmore.

He taught English for 36 years in the Indianapolis School System, particularly at Ben Davis where he was Dean of Boys for 18 years. A Boy Scout executive for 40 years, he served the YMCA for 20 years guiding a youth group.

An Elder emeritus of the Danville Christian Church, he was a member of the Danville Rotary Club, Bridgeport Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis and the Murat Shrine. He also was a member of the Golden Legion for 50 year members in the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity at Butler and the Danville Conservation Club. He was a past president of the Hendricks County Retired Teachers Association, a past president of the Hendricks County Historical Society, the Hendricks County Farm Bureau and the United Fund.

Several awards and honors were bestowed upon him: commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by the Kentucky governor, listed in "Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans" and "Who's Who in the United States"; and an "Honored Ministers Award" from the Christian Church Brotherhood. Butler University had acknowledged his contributions to the teaching profession. Other honors are state and county awards from the YMCA and a community plaque from Optimist International in Danville, "Friend of the Boy".

He was chairman for seven years of the committee responsible for financing and constructing the pool in Ellis Park, Danville.

His wife, Alma, survives and also a son, James L. Shockley, Danville; and two granddaughters, Susan and Sloan Shockley, Danville.

The body will lie in state one hour preceding the services in the Danville Christian Church 3 p.m., Friday, July 20. Dr. Joseph Stump and Rev. George Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Washington Park East Cemetery, Indianapolis.
