On March 3, 1870, J. B. Ashmore married Nancy Burgess Bell in Lawrence County, Tennessee. They became the parents of 12 children, 9 living to adulthood.
In 1891, J. B. Ashmore and his wife and children moved to Texas and settled on land in Travis County near Manor.
The Austin American, Austin, Texas, Sunday, April 4, 1926: Funeral services for J. B. Ashmore, 79 years of age, Manor pioneer and Civil war veteran, who died following a sudden attack Friday morning at his home, will be held Sunday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. A. Howell, in Manor, conducted by Rev. G. H. Farmer, pastor of the Manor Christian Church. Interment will be in Manor cemetery, in charge of Thurlow B. Weed. Pallbearers will be: W. D. Bowman, M. J. Thurman, Joe Hill, T. D. Harrell, W. A. Gilliam, Arnold Parsons of Manor. Mr. Ashmore was born at Lawrenceburg, Tenn., July 18, 1846. He entered the Confederate army the last year of the Civil war. He was married to Miss Nannie Burgess Bell. On March 3 of this year, he and his wife celebrated the 56th anniversary of their wedding. Besides his widow, Mr. Ashmore is survived by one daughter and eight sons, 31 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Three of the 12 children born to this family died in infancy. Those surviving are: Mrs. W. A. Howell, W. M. Ashmore, S. L. Ashmore, A. N. Ashmore, G. N. Ashmore, G. H. Ashmore and J. M. Ashmore of Manor, T. H. Ashmore of Bertram and Rev. C. M. Ashmore of Austin. Mr. Ashmore came to Manor in September, 1891, and had lived in and near Manor for 35 years. He was a consistent member of the Christian church for more than a half century.
