Harm J. Agena, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Gade Agena, was born Jan. 4, 1874 in Golden, Ill. Twelve days later, on Jan. 16, 1874 he was baptized by Rev. Earl Meyer. He came to Sterling in February, 1875. After receiving religious instruction he was confirmed April 14, 1889 by Pastor John Burmeister.
On April 20, 1899 he married Gretje Aden. The ceremony was performed by Pastor H. Wendt in St. John Lutheran church in Sterling. Ten children were born to them, of whom seven survive.
Mr. and Mrs. Agena and their family lived on a farm between Sterling and Adams until the spring of 1950, when the moved to Adams. In 1949 they celebrated their golden wedding with all their children and grandchildren, and it was their happy privilege to be blessed with more than 61 years of wedded life.
Mr. Agena was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran church west of Sterling, and he attended services regularly as long as his health permitted.
On Febr. 15, 1954 he suffered a severe heart attack from which he never recovered. Sunday morning, Sept. 4, 1960 he became critically ill and died that afternoon at 2:35 at the age of 86 years and 8 months. His was a long and useful life and he will be greatly missed by family and friends, for he was always a loving and considerate father and a kind, helpful neighbor.
Survivors besides his wife Gretje are four sons: John and Herman of Lincoln, Henry of Bellevue and Martin at home; three daughters, Mary (Mrs. Louis Schoen), Clara (Mrs. Ben DeBuhr) and Martha (Mrs. Raymond Mahler), all of Adams.
There are 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, also two sisters, Mrs. Annie Hestermann and Mrs. Kate Huls, both of Sterling, and many more distant relatives.
Pastor Geo. G. Gesell conducted services at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in Immanuel Lutheran church. The choir sang "Asleep in Jesus" and "Jesus Lead Thou On." Mrs. Darold Woodworth was organist. Burial was in the church cemetery.
