Thomas & Edilda Cliett lost four of their sons to the Civil War. Three years after the close of the war, Thomas died. The next year, Edilda's 23-year-old daughter died. Even now, the loss this family experienced is devastating.

In 1875, a month after the death of Edilda, four of Thomas' children by his first wife, Jane Cliett, sued Edilda's estate and its executor, Aaron Compton, to recover what they thought was their rightful inheritance as dictated in Thomas' will of 1868. Google Cliett v. Cliett to read the entire case and its outcome. In it, all the living children of Thomas' first wife are named.
