Donald Wolford Backstrom - Fayette City

Donald Wolford Backstrom, 81, a generous and caring resident of Fayette City, died Wednesday, June 29, 2011, surrounded by his loving family, at Life Care Hospital in Wilkinsburg. Don was born in West Newton on Feb. 15, 1930, a son of the late Thomas Backstrom and the late Magdalene Hofmann Backstrom.

He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War aboard the USS New Kent. He worked in the U.S. Steel facility in Clairton for over 40 years prior to retiring in 1991. He was an active and enthusiastic member of the Brightwell-Daughtery American Legion Post 484, Fayette City, Tri County Lodge 252 F & AM and a life member of the Fayette City Volunteer Fire Co. His retirement was spent traveling, working (as only he could work) on various projects, spending time with his family and spoiling his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Helen, three children, three brothers, and one sister. He delighted in six grandchildren. He was blessed with many extended family members and friends.

He is preceded in death by a twin sister, Daryl Aspray; and his older brother, Leonard Backstrom.

He will be missed by all that came in contact with his unique and vibrant personality. His work ethic and humor will be difficult to replace.

Friends will be received Friday, July 1, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the ELEY/MCCRORY FUNERAL HOME INC. 334 Main St., Fayette City, and Saturday, July 2, until 11 a.m. the hour of services with the Rev. Bryce King officiating.

Interment will follow in the West Newton Cemetery, West Newton. Post 484 will conduct services at 7 p.m., Fayette City VFC at 7:30 p.m. and Tri County Lodge 252 at 7:45 p.m. all on Friday in the funeral home.
