Leonard C. Backstrom, 76, of Collinsburg, West Newton, died Monday, May 6, 2002, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. Born Oct. 16, 1925, in Collinsburg, he was a son of the late Thomas and Magdaline (Hoffman) Backstrom. Mr. Backstrom was retired from Fort Pitt Steel and Casting in McKeesport. He was a member of the Olive Branch Baptist Church in Rostraver Township and an honorary member of the Collinsburg Volunteer Fire Company. He is survived by his wife, Jean (Lynn) Backstrom; a son and daughter-in-law, Frank T. and Sonya (King) Backstrom of Collinsburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Jerry Secrist of Collinsburg; a stepdaughter, Norma Rodgers of Somerset; three brothers, Willard Backstrom of Lady Lake, Fla., Paul Backstrom of West Newton and Donald Backstrom of Fayette City; a sister, Vae Krawczyk of Parma, Ohio; two grandchildren, Kristen and Justin Secrist; and four stepgrandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Daryl Asprey. Friends received Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JAMES C. STUMP FUNERAL HOME INC., 580 Circle Drive, Sweeney Plan/Rostraver Township. Family and friends will meet at the Olive Branch Baptist Church, Rostraver Township, for a funeral service Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Norman Melser officiating. Interment will follow in West Newton Cemetery. The Collinsburg Fire Company will hold a service Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
