Paul L. Backstrom, age 92 of West Newton, died Monday, December 28, 2020.

Born in Collinsburg on September 26, 1928, he was the son of the late Thomas Welheim and Magdalena Hofmann Backstrom.

Paul worked in maintenance for Fort Pitt Steel Casting Company of McKeesport, Westinghouse Air Brake and the Westmoreland County Courthouse at Greensburg. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of West Newton, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was the oldest member of and was instrumental in organizing the Turkeytown Volunteer Fire Department. He served in the U.S. Army and a veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife of seventy-one years, Emily Steadman Backstrom; daughters, Paula Ustazewski of Irwin and Lana Baker of West Newton; grandchildren, Paul Baker, Dr. Heather Momyer, Stephanie Phillips, Rachelle Scott and Karri Momyer; great-grandchildren, Emily Everly, Raymond Baker, Jasiah Jones, Anna Scott, Magdalena Jones, Alana Jones, Tyler Scott, Victoria Scott and Sarah Warner; sister, Vae Krawczyk of Parma, Ohio; brother, Thomas Backstrom of Rostraver; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Willard, Leonard C. and Donald Wolford Backstrom; and his sister, Daryle Christine Aspray.

Private funeral services and interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
