John Brick was a native of Waterloo County, Upper Canada. He arrived in St Cloud, Minnesota in 1876. He bought half interest from Mr. Fred Herberger in the 'People's Brewery', (subsequently Brick's Brewery) having learned this business in his youth in Canada. At the end of two years he bought the other half. John was noted to have manufactured about two-thousand barrels annually.

John died at age 34, having lived in St Cloud about 10 years. John Brick was married to the daughter of Farmer Schwartz; they had no children. John died on a Saturday morning; his death reported to have been preceded by having survived a recent cyclone by clinging to a lightning rod at his home, and his health subseqently declined. Mr. Brick had been a member of the St Joseph Society and the Fire Department; both organizations were well represented. The Union Band attended as well and a procession left the Cathedral numbering two thousand. Mr Brick is buried in the Catholic cemetery.
