COLUMBIA - Funeral service for Ervin "Poss" Byars, 88, will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2012, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mr. Byars died Sunday, May 20, 2012. Born on June 2, 1923 in Columbia, he was a son of the late Millage Melvin and Lola Derrick Byars. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving his country during World War II and retired as a Supply Specialist with the Department of Army after 30+ years. After his retirement, Mr. Byars worked over 10 years at the Fort Jackson Golf Club and he was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 65 years, Beulah Jackson Byars; daughter, Diana Barlow of Columbia; daughter-in-law, Mary Katherine Byars of Columbia; three grandchildren, William Ervin Byars, Jr. (Lisa Byars) of Columbia, Thomas Lee Byars of Surfside Beach, Justin Derrick Barlow of Columbia; three great-grandchildren, Alex, Chris and Jessica; five great-great-grandchildren, Austin, Conner, Kaylee, Bella, and Joshua.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by son, William Ervin Byars; sister, Frances Hall; brothers, Melvin, Franklin and Alvin Byars.
