Hon. Justice Joseph is the son of Capt. Denis Daly and Elizabeth Theresa Duffey Daly, born in Plymouth, North Carolina. His father died before Joseph was 1 yr. old and his mother moved with her family first to Norfolk, Va., then to New York in 1849. He is the author of "The Life Of Augustin Daly", a biography about his famous brother, playwright Augustin John Daly. Joseph was educated in N.Y.schools, studied law 1855-62, St. John's College 1883, Villanova 1902. Admitted to the Bar 1865, Judge, Court of Common Pleas 1870-96; Chief Justice 1870-96, Justice Supreme Court New York 1896-98. Honored by Pope Benedict XV: Title Knight Commander of the Order of Gregory, July 1916. He married 1st, Emma Robinson Barker 19 Nov 1973. She died in 1886 while they were traveling in England. They had two sons, Edward Hamilton Daly, and Wilfrid Augustin Daly II, and daughter Elizabeth who was with him when he died in the library of his country home, "Roanoke", named after the river on which the home in which he was born, was situated. He married 2nd, Mary Louise Smith 18 June 1890, at the home of her father, Edgar M Smith, Right Rev. Mgr. Preston, Vicar General officiated, with a wedding breakfast following. His funeral was held in the R.C. Church St Vincent Ferrer.
