Janet Knox, daughter of James Knox and the former Miss Elizabeth Craig, was born the 3rd day of October 1742 in Scotland. She had eleven brothers & sisters. Janet's parents were Scottish Presbyterians who emigrated about 1752 to northern Ireland to escape Catholic rule.
In 1767, Janet and her parents emigrated to America arriving in Charles Town, South Carolina aboard the ship, "Prince of Wales" on the 14th day of May. Per the Bounty Land Act of 1763, The Knox Family were granted 450 acres on Rocky Creek in the Chester District of the back country of South Carolina.
In1768, Janet married John Gaston, Jr., son of Justice John Gaston and the former Esther Waugh. The Gaston family were also Presbyterians and well known throughout Chester, South Carolina; John, Sr. first being King George's "Justice of the Peace" for the area and continued in that post after the revolutionary war started.
As the unrest approached leading up to the Revolutionary War in 1776, both the Knox and Gaston families became loyal patriots to "the cause of freedom" with each family sacrificing sons to gain that independence. Janet lost a brother and John lost three brothers. But let it be known that Janet and her sister-in-laws were all heroins helping nurse and harbor American troops during the conflict.
During Janet and John Gaston's 40 year marriage, they had two sons and two daughters. Both sons died shortly after their father's death in 1808. The daughters, Elizabeth the eldest married Jonathan Ferguson and Esther married her 2nd cousin, Samuel Gaston.
Around 1809-10, Janet emigrated west with Esther and Samuel to Jefferson County, Illinois; first going to Butler County, Kentucky with the Ferguson's. They were part of the western expansion as the country moved west.
At the age of 92, Janet Knox Gaston applied for a pension for John Gaston service in South Carolina Militia during American Revolutionary War. The pension being granted by the U.S. Congress in 1834 after hearing about widows like Janet who did everything but fight to win America's independence.
On August 1, 1839 Janet Knox Gaston departed this life at the home of her daughter, Esther Gaston Gaston in Walnut Hill Prairie Township, Illinois at the age of 96 years old.
