Samuel Knox, a son of James Knox and the former Miss Elizabeth Craig, was born 1753 in Ballymoney, County Antrim Ireland. He had eleven brothers & sisters. Samuel's parents were Scottish Presbyterians who emigrated about 1752 to northern Ireland to escape Catholic rule.

In 1767, Samuel and his parents emigrated to America arriving in Charles Town, South Carolina aboard the ship, "Prince of Wales" on the 14th day of May. Per the Bounty Land Act of 1763, The Knox Family were granted 450 acres on Rocky Creek in the Chester District of the back country of South Carolina.

At the out-break of the Revolutionary War, Samuel, served as a substitute for his brother William Knox in Capt. Brown's company in Gen. Sumpter's regiment of the South Carolina Militia; stationed at Fort Moultrie near Charleston. He was part of this regiment during the attack made by the British. Samuel then enlisted for nine months in the same company. Later after his enlistment; he joined another volunteer company in Chester Co., South Carolina commanded by Capt. McClure during which time of service he was at the following engagements: Rocky Mount, Hanging Rock and Blackstock Plantation.

During this time, Samuel Knox married Catherine (Caroline) Jones around 1780-81. They were married by her uncle John Simpson, a Presbyterian minister and relative her mother. They had eight known children.
After the war, Samuel and several relatives emigrated west to Kentucky and then settling in the area around Bedford County, Tennessee. Here Samuel and Catherine lived out their days.

In 1832, Samuel applied for a pension for his service during the war; which was granted and extended to Catherine, after his death.

Samuel Knox departed his earthly life on the 6th of July 1843 in the 90th year of his age.
