Elizabeth Gaston Ferguson was the daughter of John and Jannet (née Knox) Gaston from Richburg in the Chester District of South Carolina. Both of her parents were Revolutionary patriots and descendants of Scot-Irish Presbyterians. Elizabeth's grandfather, Justice John Gaston was first appointed a Justice of the Peace for Craven Co., (later Chester District) South Carolina by King George III in 1764. He became a notorious patriot against the King during the American Revolution.

Elizabeth was the sister of James (1777-1809), William (1779-1808) and Esther (1792-1854) Gaston.

In 1795, Elizabeth Gaston married Jonathan Ferguson, son of Paul and Ann (née Sutton) Ferguson of Chester District, South Carolina. About 1810, Elizabeth and Jonathan Ferguson, moved to Butler County, Kentucky with members of both the Gaston and Ferguson families. Here Elizabeth and Jonathan raised their eleven children:

Elizabeth Gaston Ferguson died at the age 76 on the 2nd day of July 1853. She is buried beside her husband Jonathan and several of her children.
