In 1805, as was the custom of the day, Esther married her second cousin, Samuel Gaston, son of William and Mary [née McClure] Gaston; also from Chester County, South Carolina. Around 1807, Samuel and Esther along with several other family members, emigrated to Indian, then on to Illinois, seeking fertile soil and new fortunes. Here they settled around Marion, Jefferson and Washington counties Illinois.
Samuel and Esther Gaston owned some 16,000 acres in and around Walnut Hill in Jefferson County. There they raised their nine known children:

Esther Gaston out lived Samuel by 28 years, but with the help of her son, William¹ and son-in-law, Richard Breeze; Esther lived to the age of 61. She died at Walnut Hill on the 21st day of February 1854. Esther is buried along side Samuel and her mother, Jannet (née Knox) Gaston in what is now known as Baldridge Cemetery.

¹ William Gaston, a veteran of the Black Hawk War, serving in Capt. William N. Dobbin's Spy Battalion of the Illinois Militia. He served as an Illinois State Sentator from 1828-1842. He went to California in 1850 during the California "gold rush" and died in San Bernardino, California in 1868... never returning home to his family.
