Walter Blum Dies

Walter J. Blum, a member of one of Dansville's oldest and most respected families, died in Orlando, Fla. hospital yesterday (Jan. 11, 1960). He was 71 years of age.

Mr. Blum operated a shoe store on Main St. for many years prior to his retirement five years ago, when he turned his business over to his son, William G. As a young man he had taken over the business, one of the oldest retail establishments in Dansville, from his father.

At one time he was known as "Mr. Baseball" in Dansville, being active as a player while in High School here and later in semi-pro ranks.

Mr. Blum was born in Dansville and lived here during his entire life, except during the winter months of recent years when he lived in Florida.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church, a member of the St. Boniface Society and the Knights of Columbus. He was also active in the Dansville Board of Trade.

For more than 20 years Mr. Blum was a member of Dansville Rotary Club and served as president in 1945. Long active in Boy Scout work, he headed the Rotary Club's cub scout committee.

In addition to his son William, Mr. Blum is survived by his wife, Marie; three daughters, Mrs. James (Elizabeth) Derrick, now stationed with her husband in Japan; Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Hart of Dansville, and Mrs. John (Flora) Welch, also of Dansville; 14 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements await the return of members of the family who are in Florida.
