Ex-Dansville Leader Dies in Florida Home

Born circa 1919
Died June 13, 1972
A longtime Dansville businessman and community leader, William G. Blum, died unexpectedly Tuesday (June 13, 1972) at his home in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. He was 53.

Mr. Blum was preparing to go to his job as a store manager for the Britt's Department Store firm in Ft. Lauderdale when he was stricken.

He was well known in this community where he operated the Blum Shoe Store until seven years ago when the business, which has been operated by his father before him, was sold to the Thomas and Dwyer company.

Mr. Blum had served as president of Dansville Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce and was the general chairman of the fund drive which resulted in the construction of the present St. Mary's School building on Elizabeth St. He was active in many other community affairs. He served as president of the Protectives Fire Co., and was a member of the Brae Burn Men's Golf Association while in Dansville.

A World War II flyer, he was a retired Air Force colonel. As a bomber pilot during the war, his plane was shot down and he spent many months as a prisoner of war in Germany. Following the war, Mr. Blum continued in reserve status and became commander of the squadron stationed at the Niagara Falls Air Base.

Mr. Blum was a graduate of Dansville Central High School and attended Notre Dame University prior to military service.

Surviving are his wife, Rene; two sons, Christopher and Jeffrey, both of Ft. Lauderdale; two daughters, Diane of Boston, Mass., and Jamie at home; two grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Walter Blum of Dansville; three sisters, Mrs. James (Elizabeth) Derrick of Midwest City, Okla., Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Hart and Mrs. John (Flora) Welch, both of Dansville.

Funeral arrangements are being made by the Baird Chase Funeral Home in Ft. Lauderdale. Requiem Mass will be said Friday at 9 a.m. and interment will be in Ft. Lauderdale cemetery.

A Memorial Mass will be said in St. Mary's Church Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. (GCE, June 15, 1972, p8)
