CHARLES DUFFIELD, EX-JUDGE, DIES

SUTTON Charles A. Duffield Jr., 86, of Sutton, a former
circuit judge and prosecuting attorney in Braxton County, died Friday
at Heartland Skilled Health Care Center, Charleston, after a long
illness.
Born in Braxton County, he attended Marshall University and was
a graduate of West Virginia University law school.
He was elected in 1936 to the first of three terms as Braxton
County prosecuting attorney. In 1951, he was appointed to fill a
vacancy as judge of the 13th Circuit Court, serving Braxton, Clay,
Webster and Gilmer counties. He served 21 years on the bench without
ever being challenged for re-election.
Duffield later served as a member of the state Natural Resources
Commission.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of board of
directors for Home National Bank, Sutton, with 30 years' service and
chairman of the board with five years' service. He was a member and
elder of Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church, Gassaway.
Surviving: wife, Rebecca Fox Duffield; daughter, Margaret D.
Guerrero of Graham, Wash.; eight grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Davis Memorial
Presbyterian Church, Gassaway, with the Rev. Barbara Accord.
officiating. The body will be cremated. There will be no visitation
