Contributed by Geo - August 17, 1933 - Carroll Daily Herald - Abram Basler was born Feb. 16, 1844, in Susquehanna county, Pa., and died at his home in Auburn, Ia., Aug. 10, 1933, having attained the age of 89 years, 5 months and 25 days.
In January, 1856, Mr. Basler, his parents, five brothers and two sisters, all of whom have preceded him in death, came to Iowa, settling in Sac county, three miles north of Auburn. On Aug. 16, 1864, he was united in marriage to Miss Rose Jones, who died nine years, ago. To this union were born two children, Minnie M. and Clarence C, both residing in Auburn.
Left to mourn his loss, besides the children, there are two granddaughters, Donna (Mrs. Jesse Doty of Dearborn, Mich.) and Phyllis Elaine Basler of Auburn, and one great grandchild, Jacqueline Grace Doty.
Tht first four years of Mr. Basler's married life were spent on a farm near Sac City. Later he moved to a farm in Coon Valley township where he remained for 14 years, after which he brought his family to Auburn, residing here until his death. Mr. Basler has been a faithful member of the Masonic Order for 68 years. He joined Occidental Lodge, A.F. & A.M., No. 178, of Sac City, Ia., as one of the five charter members. Later he transferred to Jeptha Lodge, A.F. & A.M., No. 201, of Auburn, Ia. He was also a member of Brilliant Star chapter No. 188, O.E.S. of Auburn. He was the oldest Mason in Iowa at the time of his death.
The entire community will greatly miss the passing of Mr. Basler; who, although he was a very quiet, unassuming man, was always ready to do his part in promoting civic affairs and to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. A Masonic funeral, conducted by Rev. H.C. Schneider of Carroll, was held at the home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Music was furnished by the Masonic male quartet of Lake City, composed of Dr. W.E. McCrary, Mr. Newendorf, Al Smith and Earl
Waters, accompanied by Leta Sickle. The body was borne to its last resting place in Auburn cemetery by Ray Williams, J.H. Jansen, Wm. Richardson, Frank Hawks, E.C. Barts and F.B. Layman.
Besides the large number of Masons from nearby towns there also were a number of relatives and friends, including Charles Parsons and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Scharnweber of Carroll; Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Brutzke and Miss Clara Brutzke of Wisner Neb.; Mrs. Jesse Doty of Dearborn, Mich.; Mrs. Ella Basler; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Basler, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Van Aim and children; Mr. and Mrs. George Fenner; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Prickett, Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
