The Sac Sun - Friday , April 4th, 1873 - Fine Farms - Some of the farmers near Grant City have become well settled and by lots and perseverance have their farms in good order and condition - well fenced and watered and provided with good farmhouses. Peter Basler, one of the earliest settlers in the county, has a fine a farm and as good a house as one will find anywhere in northwestern Iowa.

The Chronicle - Thursday , March 8th, 2001 - Mr. and Mrs. Peter Basler were among the first permanent settlers near Grant City. They left Pennsylvania in 1855, crossed the
Mississippi River in January of 1856, and settled three miles north of Auburn in February.

The Mob and the Flock by Paul N Jewett - Peter Basler was born in Edinburgh, Scotland March 15, 1813. He married a lass named Mary, only a year younger than he, from Lancastershire, England and they emigrated to America... Their son Thomas settled in Carroll county, IA and married Elizabeth Ann Williams.

The Sac Sun - Friday , January 2nd, 1885 - Uncle Peter Basler, everybody's uncle, he too is dead! Going toward his home last Saturday evening, he fell off the bridge between Mr Impsons and his house and fractured 3 of his ribs and perhaps sustained internal injuries. He suffered great pain until within a few hours of his death.

Probably no man was better known in the eastern part of the county than Uncle Pete. He was a good neighbor. His unfortunate habit of drinking made him an enemy to himself but to every one else he was good, kind, helpful, and many a man has reasons to hold Uncle Pete in grateful remembrance for valuable and timely assistance in time of need.

A few years ago he moved into our town, since which time he could be seen almost daily on our streets. He will be greatly missed. His friends and neighbors will miss him - all who are accustomed to come to our town will miss him, his sons and daughters will miss him, and perhaps most of all his grand daughter, Miss Jennie Basler, will miss him, his house having been her home since her mother's death some years ago.
