DAVENPORT — Robert F. Murphy, 84, of Davenport, died Saturday, August 27, 2011, at the Kahl Home, Davenport. His family would like for you to join them in a Celebration of Bob's life and Mass at 10 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2011, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 516 Fillmore S., Davenport. Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport, with a vigil service beginning at 4 p.m. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park, with military honors conducted by American Legion Post #26, Davenport. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family requests donations be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Kahl Home, or to the Alzheimer's Association.
Robert was born in 1927 to John and Estella Murphy in Appanoose County, Iowa. He attended St. Ambrose High School in Davenport and joined the U.S. Navy to serve in World War II. As a member of the Teamsters Union, he worked for Merchant Transfer and finished his career as an employee of Alcoa in the Chem Lab until retirement. A devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Davenport, he served as a member of the Holy Name Society and served as a "participant of the Mass" in various functions. He also volunteered as an instructor to assist adults in an"English as a Second Language Program."
He married Mary "Ann" Winchell on September 23, 1948, in Davenport. She died June 13, 2000. He is survived by his sister, Karen (Wes) Bloomer, and his five children, Patricia "Trish" (David) Myers, Susan (Paul) Cato, Pamela (Doug) Briggs, Michael (Debra) Murphy, and Barbara (Michael) Dettlaff; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren, Bryan (Noelle) Myers with Brianna, Amy (Izam) Yassin with Elina, Brock Myers, Rebecca (Shawn) Stewart with Grant, Abigail and Avery, Michael (Keri) Cato with Paulmer, Jennifer Cato, Sara (Dan) Bailey with Violet and Annabelle, Todd (Angie) Briggs with Boston and Brody, Alyssa (Paul) Marconi with Tyler, Landon and Keaton, Gabriel Murphy, Benjamin (Heidi) Murphy, Megan Murphy, Kathryn "Katie" (Kevin) Rokusek with Kaitlyn, and Kimberly (Rob) Munn with Sam and Maicey. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by brothers, John, Michael "Leo," Thomas, Kenneth, Charles, and Terrance and sisters, Lorraine and Catherine "Kate" Smysor.
