Davenport - Charles M. Murphy, of Davenport, died on Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2006, at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Visitation will be held one hour before the services on Saturday. Burial with military honors will be held in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island Illinois at 11 a.m. Monday, March 13, 2006. Those wishing to attend the committal service should meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. Monday. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Charles was born June 14, 1931, in Davenport, the son of John and Estelle (Over) Murphy. He was a graduate of St. Ambrose Academy in Davenport.

During his Army career, he served with the Ranger 3rd Airborne Company in Korea and the 1st Calvary Division in Vietnam, where he did three tours of duty. He received four Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star and many other achievement awards, including C.I.B. and Wings. Also when Charles did a tour in Germany, he was an accomplished football coach who helped lead the Army teams to many victories.

In his free time he was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing with his friends in Wisconsin.

Those left to honor his memory include his sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Les Bloomer, of Davenport; his brother, Robert Murphy, of Bettendorf; his sister-in-law Helen Murphy, of Davenport; and numerous nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Kate, and his brothers, John, Mike, Tom, Kenneth and Terry.
