James Irvin Merritt, Sr., age 86, of Pine Bluff, died Tuesday, November 9, 2010.
He was born February 14, 1924 at Thornton (Calhoun County), AR, a son of the late William Daniel Merritt and Elmyra Word Merritt. Mr. Merritt served in the United States Army during World War II, was a service man for General Waterworks, retiring after 40 years of service.

A very active member of Oak Park Free Will Baptist Church, he had served as song leader, Sunday school teacher, usher, and director of the Church Training Service.

His wife, Edith Catherine Parnell Merritt, preceded him in death March 29, 2004. Also predeceasing him were three brothers, William Edward Merritt, Carl Alvin Merritt, and Lester Earl Merritt; and a grandson, Michael Allen Holloway.

Survivors include his sons, James I. Merritt, Jr. (Deloris), Richard Merritt (Diann), Roger Merritt (Ollie), and Jimmy Holloway (Carrol), all of Pine Bluff and Stephen Merritt (Lisa) of Sheridan; his daughters, Linda Faye Burroughs and Cathy White (David), both of Pine Bluff his brother, J. Frank Merritt (Sue) of Pine Bluff his sisters, Lenora Roberson of Hot Springs, Elmyra Rhodes of Pine Bluff, and Lucille Clay of Jonesboro; 26 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday, 1:30 p.m. at Oak Park Free Will Baptist Church with Brother Will Harmon and Brother Bill Money officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Fuller Hale-South Funeral Services.
