Allerton News 1894-1895

The reaper again came to our midst placing the cold hand on our respected citizen, James Knapp, who was taken slightly ill, September, 94, and constantly but gradually grew worse, when about four weeks ago he became so much reduced that he was unable to leave his room and from that date all medical aid proved inadequate only to relieve his suffering temporarily, when on Saturday morning, December, 15, the chord of a noble Christian life was severed and the spirit took its flight to the God who gave it.

James Knapp was born in the state of New York, December 16, 1827, and on the day of his burial would have reached the age of 87 years (this is an error in the obit). He was converted and joined the Baptist church in 1842 and has ever been an earnest and consistent member of that organization. He removed with his family to Lee County, Iowa and remained there until about 1876, when he removed with his family to a farm four miles south of Allerton. In the fall of '90, he disposed of his farm and moved to Allerton and lived there until his death, he leaves a wife, and six children all grown and married, to mourn his loss. By his death, Allerton loses a model citizen, a consecrated Christian and a devoted husband and father, one who gave the earnings of life and earnest labor to educate his children to walk in the avenues of a grand and pure life.. Reverend Clemmons conducted the funeral services by special request and an immense and sorrowful gathering tendered their last respects to the remains of one they loved by their attendance at the funeral services at the Baptist church and burial at the Allerton cemetery.
