The funeral for Odell Hodge, 77, of 377 Cordover Drive, Martinsville, who died May 16, 2009, at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center, will be held at noon Friday at St. Paul High Street Baptist Church. The Rev. William A. Shackleford will officiate. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the church for a half-hour before the funeral and other times at the home of his daughter, Linda Payne, 365 Laurel Park Ave., Martinsville.
Hodge was born in Martinsville on July 21, 1931, to Sam Hodge and Elizabeth Flood Hodge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Ann Niblett Hodge; a daughter, Sandra Hodge Douglas; five sisters, Julious Swanson-Clark, Rosa Kidd, Georgia Mobley, Sallie Ruth Bowles and Dorothy Hodge; and four brothers, John Henry Hodge, William R. Hodge, James O. Hodge and Raish Hodge.
He retired from Tultex with 29 years of service.
He was a member of St. Paul High Street Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, was in the men's choir, men's forum, Sunday school, Baptist Training Union (BTU) ministry, transportation ministry, was charity board chairman and on the Benevolence Board Ministry, of which he was a member emeritus. He also was a member of the Smith River Missionary Baptist Association.
Surviving, in addition to his daughter, Linda Hodge Payne of Martinsville, are a son, Jerry Anthony Hodge Sr. of Atlanta, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Nancy Hodge of Gary, W.Va., and Lizzie Mae Hairston of Cleveland, Ohio.
